April 13th – To Me, of all People

As a child I was not brought up to go to church, nor to Sunday school.But when, in my teens,I became aware that the Christian faith was not a load of religious mumbo-jumbo, as I had supposed,I began to open my ignorant and cluttered mind to the possibility that all this stuff about Jesus might just be true.After all, look at the transformation it had had on my father.Well, I still had a long way to go because I had to receive for myself what was to be passed on to me from Jesus himself.This is Paul’s digest of the facts:
“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve.After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time,most of them are still living, though some have fallen asleep.Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.
And last of all he appeared to me, as one born abnormally late.” I Corinthians 15: 3-7

“At last he appeared to me”. That’s the clinching argument which no one can deny. I know Jesus is alive because when I was hell-bent going along the main road from Jerusalem to Damascus he came to me, and spoke to me, and since then all I know or want to know is Christ and the power of his resurrection.That meeting turned Saul of Tarsus, enemy of the church and all Christians, into the one who became ‘St. Paul’. If you are unpersuaded by the evidence of other people, I dare you to say, and mean, “Risen Lord Jesus, come to me that I may know you and be stung broad awake.!” Make that your prayer for today,so that you can end it singing with all the company of the redeemed:

“Long my imprisoned spirit lay fast-bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray,I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,I rose, went forth, and followed thee.”
Charles Wesley

Now read Ephesians Ch. 3 and pray.

Thought 4 The Day

A little philosophy inclineth man’s mind to atheism, but depth in philosophy bringeth men’s minds about to religion. (Francis Bacon)
