August 29th – The Bridge to Beyond

One of the most demanding questions asked by every age is simply this “When it comes to knowing about God, Is there anyone I can trust?” “How can I be sure that I’m not being led up the garden path?” I mean, “Who is there whose word and life we can trust. Is there anyone who won’t let us down?” Every leader has some axe or other to grind.
Sermon No. 3, in Hebrews, which deals with this, covers three chapters, 5, 6 and 7, and the text is taken from Psalm 110 v. 4.
The author was looking for someone who was different from ordinary mortals, because he knew that people, even the best people, let you down. Even men like King David turn out to be corrupt. Surely no human being is totally reliable? Is there anyone who is like a type of Christ in the Old Testament? Well he found one, in Psalm 110 v. 4 and in Genesis 14: 17-24Genesis 14: 17-24

, which speak of a high priest called Melchizedek. He is a mysterious figure having no family tree, who just appeared – as one who comes from another dimension. Not really like the rest of us.
This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him, and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. …Hebrews 7:1-2Hebrews 7:1-2

But you gave tithes, a tenth of your income, only to God: . So Abraham recognised this priest Melchizedek as someone very special – someone representing God.
First his name means “king of righteousness”, then also “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, like the Son of God he remains a priest for ever. Hebrews 7:2-3Hebrews 7:2-3

Different from us – as is God himself: yet here amongst us. On our level, but higher than us. Now that is the answer. That is the point. Is there anyone I can trust myself to? Someone like us, but in essence different from us?
Yes, his name is JESUS, who comes from the dimension of eternity. He is the one you can trust totally. He is eternally reliable…. because Jesus lives for ever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. Such a high priest meets our need – one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests ..Hebrews 7:24-27Hebrews 7:24-27

The Latin word for high priest, ‘Pontifex’, means a bridge builder, someone on whom you may cross over.
A Prayer:
Blessed are you, Lord Jesus, for in you have I put my trust, and I can never be confounded.
Now read Hebrews Chapter 7.
