January 9th – ‘Your Father In Heaven’

For the last few days we have been looking at the well loved parable of the two disappointing sons who had a wonderful father who loved them both.
Samuel Chadwick once wrote: “I have never forgotten the dread that gripped me when, as a youth, I was invited to go to an interview at the Manse. I walked past the door several times before I had the courage to ring the bell. As I stood at the door my heart throbbed in my ears.” He was due to speak personally with one of the greatest and most revered preachers in the world.
He went on: “Imagine my surprise when I was shown into a room to find the great man on all fours giving rides to his riotously happy children, who had turned his long beard into driving reins!
He was their father. They knew nothing of the awe in which others stood of him, although they would learn as they grew older and respect would deepen, but they would never fear him.The children of the house are fearless and free” when it comes to relating to their father.”
Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead?
Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him! Luke 11: 11-13Luke 11: 11-13
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? 12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? offer: Gr. give 13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

A Prayer: Father in heaven, may your name be hallowed and honoured by me and yet prevent me from keeping you at a distance.
Now read Psalm 103 and rejoice as you pray it.
