March 18th – A Sense of Wonder

Compare these two scenes. In one a man wakes up, drags himself out of bed and shuffles round the house, cursing the cold, wishing he was going to bed, not having to leave it; muttering and sighing ‘Oh what a pig life is – I’m late, my car tyre needs checking …. ‘ Moan and grumble …
In the second case a man of 90 years comes downstairs sparkling “Another day – how beautiful, so much to enjoy”, and with wonder on his face goes out to look at the fields near his home: ecstatic, with a sense of wonder (a true story).
Now please understand me: I’m not advocating some cheery chappy nonsense which tells us to “cheer up” when we feel dreadful – because smiling through gritted teeth is really a snarl! In speaking of a sense of wonder, of being open to the marvel of the world around us, and the world beyond us (that for which we were designed to be at home), is being aware of the mystery which is personal and talks to you. It can be triggered by a flock of birds navigating themselves across a vast distance – the wonder of it. It can be triggered by music which catches you off guard and moves you to tears – of joy not sadness, although you feel there is so much more in it than you can assimilate. You know that you cannot respond adequately. Refuse to be dragged down by misery. Ask for a sense of wonder to explode into your day, for God longs to share himself and his gifts with his children, and you know the most endearing things about children – they are always ready to play.
This is from Proverbs,There are three things that are too amazing for me, four that I do not understand: the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a maiden. Proverbs 30: 18-19Proverbs 30: 18-19
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

18 There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not: 19 The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid. midst: Heb. heart

A Prayer of wonder: When I consider the heavens, the sun, the moon, and the starts, the work of your hands – what is man, that you should so favour him? Truly in wisdom have you made us all.
Now read Psalm 104 and be filled with wonder.
