I apologise for having indulged in reminiscences of my early days as a Christian, and if you can stand one bit more, then let me say that for me the Christian faith became a truly living thing not when I became aware that I’d been a secret and dead believer for over two years, but when I actually stood up to be counted as a Christian. That was resurrection!
It was in India. I found myself in a military transit camp, in the City of Madras, waiting for some ship to take me to where my unit had sailed, much further east. On the first night I wandered into town and bumped into an open air meeting in the centre of that crowded city. I was horrified to see it consisted of a few Christians, holding an open air preaching service. I turned to hurry away (“religious maniacs” I muttered). My conscience rang like a telephone. “God here! Go if you must, but this time go alone.” I could not. I was rooted. People came – people went. I found myself eventually on the front row. A stranger came and said “Hello brother – are you a Christian?” I stuttered, and stammered “Well – er – yes”. I mean I was no Hindu -I was British, after all. He stopped the meeting and declared “Our brother here is a Christian, and he is now going to tell us all how he found the Lord”. Thud!
Suddenly I was doing the one thing I dreaded: coming out publicly for Jesus Christ. It may not have done anything for that huge crowd, but it did a miracle in me.I had believed in my heart, and now – at last- I had confessed with my lips that Jesus is Lord, and my whole world changed. That day was my first real step into Christian ministry.A hundred miracles followed, but the main deed was done. I was alive in Christ.
“The word is near you: it is in your mouth and in your heart.” That is the word of faith we are proclaiming. That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord”, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
“For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” Romans 10: 8-10Romans 10: 8-10
